Queen Street in Wainuiomata acts as a hub, hosting a diverse array of shops, alongside the Community Centre and Public Library. Many shops here include smaller takeaways and restaurants.

Previously, Wainuiomata’s primary shopping precinct was a mall with an entrance on Queen Street and three additional entrances within the surrounding parking area. Over time, the mall lost its appeal and fell into disrepair. Subsequently, Progressive Enterprises (now Woolworths) acquired the property, transforming it by constructing a supermarket and revitalizing the parking facilities. Today, the former mall site has been redeveloped into a thoroughfare known as The Strand, providing access to the supermarket and a McDonald’s restaurant.

This area is not the oldest shopping area in Wainuiomata however. That distinction goes to The Village in Homedale.
