The Whakanui Track connects Wainuiomata to the Ōrongorongo River with scenic views of the Remutakas.
The Whakanui Track departs either from Hine Road carpark or the top of Sunny Grove. It begins at the bottom of Skerretts Gully, then ascends up the hillside when it crosses over Skerretts Creek. At the top of the hill it connects with the McKerrow Track, just before some scenic lookouts of Reservoir Valley and Wainuiomata and beyond. Continuing on the Whakanui from the top of the ridge, it is easier going as it winds its way along the ridgeline and up and down hills till it eventually drops down to the Orongorongo River.
Once in the Orongorongo Valley, if you return to the ridge via the East Whakanui Track (a trapping track), you will see a goblin forest that rivals the experience found in the Tararuas.
You can also combine the Whakanui Track with the East Whakanui Track and Old Whakanui Track to create a circuit around Nikau Creek Gully. By adding the Sunny Grove Track, the route becomes a five-hour loop walk from the Hine Road Recreation Reserve. However, this is a demanding route. Much of it is poorly maintained and there is little signage, apart from coloured tags that help mark the route and pest-trap lines. It should only be attempted by people who know the area well, or by experienced walkers confident in their ability to navigate their way out of the bush if they lose the track.
