Wainuiomata is home to a number of waterfalls hidden throughout its steep bush covered valleys, remote creeks, and rugged hill country. Fed by high rainfall and an extensive network of streams flowing through the surrounding ranges, waterfalls can be found across much of the forested landscape, ranging from small cascades to larger multi tiered falls.

Many of these waterfalls are located along tributaries of the Wainuiomata River, including waterways such as Skerretts Creek. Some falls are easily accessible via established walking tracks, while others require off track navigation, creek walking, or steep bush bashing through remote terrain.

The landscape of Wainuiomata is particularly well suited to waterfall formation. Narrow valleys and rapidly descending streams create countless drops, chutes, and cascades throughout the surrounding hills. After periods of heavy rain, many normally small creeks transform dramatically, with waterfalls becoming larger.
