The powerhouse supplied electricity for the drills and lighting for construction of the Orongorongo Tunnel.
Hidden in the Wainuiomata bush are remains of the Wainuiomata Powerhouse which was once a functioning power plant, as early as 1921. It was built to support the construction of the Orongorongo Tunnel. Water from the Morton Dam overflow was channelled onto turbines, generating electricity to power air compressors and other essential equipment. Most importantly, the power enabled the boring of a 10,494-foot (3.2 km) tunnel, minus what was already cut out by hand. It also supplied fresh air to the tunnel face and provided electric lighting for both the camp and tunnel.
Prior to its construction, engineers estimated the powerhouse would produce around 80 horsepower.
Improved version:
The plant itself has largely disappeared, but sections of the concrete floor remain, now completely hidden within the native bush. Its exact location is known to only a few.
