Richard Prouse Park is a sports park used for football (soccer) in the winter. The clubrooms for Wainuiomata AFC are located at the western end of the park. In summer the park is used for cricket. Outside of sport, the park is popular for recreational purposes due to its huge size and the quality of the grounds. It’s a popular place for walking dogs, picnics, even river swimming.

Wainuiomata Regional Park adjoins the Richard Prouse at its eastern border, so it is a popular entrance to the regional park at Reservoir Road.  The northern border of the park is the Wainuiomata River where there are a number of swimming holes. To the east, a bridge crosses the river where it dissects the park into a larger western side and smaller eastern side. The eastern side was added to Richard Prouse Park at a later period. This part of the park is more recreational due to its proximity to the regional park coupled with being used less for sport.
