The Village, stands as the first shopping area in Wainuiomata. It is located in Homedale where the first houses emerged. Over the course of numerous decades since its development, Queen Street and The Strand have surpassed The Village as the primary shopping destination.

Today, The Village has fallen into decline, and many of the buildings are in a state of disrepair. But they are slowly being demolished and replaced. For example, the Fitzroy Tavern is now a modern housing estate.

Over the years, there have been many shops and services come and go. Included was a Post Office, dairies, small supermarkets, takeaways, cake shop, greengrocer, newsstand, barber, etc.
