The Village in Wainuiomata

The Village holds the distinction of being the oldest shopping area in Wainuiomata.

Moores Valley Road circa early 1950s

The Village, stands as the first shopping area in Wainuiomata dating back as far as 1941. It is located in Homedale where the first houses emerged. Over the course of numerous decades since its development, Queen Street and The Strand have surpassed The Village as the primary shopping destination.

Today, The Village has fallen into decline, and many of the buildings are in a state of disrepair. But they are slowly being demolished and replaced. For example, the Fitzroy Tavern is now a modern housing estate.

Over the years, there have been many shops and services come and go. Included was a Post Office, dairies, small supermarkets, takeaways, cake shop, greengrocer, newsstand, barber, etc.

Several new businesses have opened recently, including a nail salon and a fast-food takeaway. If this trend continues, more shops could follow, potentially leading to a revival of The Village as a local shopping area.
