A moderate three hour point-to-point walk between Wainuiomata and Days Bay.
Main Ridge Track is a 5.7-kilometre point-to-point walk through the Northern Forest of East Harbour Regional Park, connecting the summit of Wainuiomata Hill with Williams Park in Days Bay. Allow approximately three hours to complete the route.
Beginning at Wainuiomata Hill, the track climbs through mature native forest towards Lowry Trig, the highest point in the Northern Forest at approximately 373 metres above sea level. A bench along the route provides a welcome place to rest and enjoy glimpses of Wellington Harbour through the trees. The track then follows the forested Main Ridge before descending steeply to Days Bay via the Kererū Track.
Walking from Wainuiomata Hill to Days Bay is generally the easier direction, as travelling in reverse requires a sustained climb from near sea level to the ridgeline. Parking is available near the Wainuiomata Hill entrance, but because this is a one-way walk, you will need to arrange return transport or retrace your route. Days Bay is served by regular buses, providing another option for reaching or leaving the track.
