Skerretts Creek in Wainuiomata is one of the main tributaries of the Wainuiomata River and has a notable history. The creek once formed part of Wainuiomata’s drinking water catchment, supplying water to local residents. It is also known for a World War II aircraft crash, when a plane came down near the headwaters of the creek on McKerrow Ridge in 1943.
The creek flows through the scenic valley known as Skerretts Gully, and following the creek upstream toward McKerrow Ridge or the McKerrow Track at the top of the ridge, takes you through rugged and picturesque country. Along the route are three main waterfalls with some referring to them as the Lower, Middle, and Upper Falls. A number of smaller cascades and drops also exist throughout the creek system.
There are no formed tracks leading to these waterfalls, with access requiring travel directly up the creek itself. However, it should be noted that this route can be dangerous, involving steep, slippery, and difficult terrain.
At least one unnamed tributary of Skerretts Creek contains an impressive waterfall hidden deep within the surrounding wilderness. Even more remote than the main creek, this waterfall is rarely visited and has likely been seen by few people.
