Supplejack, also known as kareao, is a native climbing plant often seen winding its way through New Zealand forests. In Wainuiomata, it is a familiar sight in damp bush, where its long, tough stems twist through shrubs and trees in search of light. In some places, it forms dense tangles that can make off-track walking slow and difficult.
The bright red berries are one of the most noticeable features of supplejack. They hang among glossy green leaves and bring small bursts of colour to the shaded undergrowth. These berries are part of the forest food chain, attracting native birds and helping support the wider ecosystem.
