The Zigzag Track follows a series of switchbacks that gain elevation steadily to join the Rātā Ridge Track.
The Zigzag Track begins between 1 and 3 Fraser Street in Wainuiomata and climbs steeply into the Northern Forest section of East Harbour Regional Park. Named after the series of sharp bends near its lower end, the track follows an old firebreak before joining the Rātā Ridge Track higher on the hillside. The Stanley Street Track also meets the Rātā Ridge Track at this junction.
The Zigzag Track provides an alternative entrance or exit for longer walks towards Lowry Trig and the Main Ridge Track. The track can be combined with nearby routes, including the Fern Gully, Lees Grove, and Stanley Street tracks, to create a variety of loop walks.
The track’s gravel and clay surface can become slippery after rain, so care is needed, particularly when descending.
