Baring Head / Ōrua-pouanui can be treated as more than just the lighthouse. It includes the lighthouse compound, former keepers’ cottages, the Powerhouse, Story Hub, Para Hill, wartime remains, the NIWA atmospheric research area, the exposed marine terraces, the Wainuiomata River mouth, and the rugged coastline to the south. Baring Head is part of East Harbour Regional Park, accessed from the Wainuiomata Coast side, with rugged remote landscapes, historic buildings and structures, and sweeping views over Cook Strait.
