Top Pool has always been known as a swimming area, but back in the 1970s or early 80s, the council filled up the pool with rocks to deter swimmers. The reason given was safety issues and for a time their strategy worked. But subsequent storms have washed out some of these rocks making the pool suitable for swimming again. It is still somewhat off the pool’s glory days when this was one of the deepest in Wainuiomata. People use to jump from the bank and even off trees above the bank.
