The growth of Wainuiomata was facilitated by access routes in the form of tracks which gave way to roads.
Owing to Wainuiomata’s geographical isolation from the Hutt Valley, initial connections were limited to rugged tracks navigating steep hills. Over time, road infrastructure evolved, notably with the construction of the pivotal Wainuiomata Road, serving as the primary access route in and out of the valley. This historically steep winding road traverses a huge hill that separates the suburb from the Hutt Valley. Today, the road has undergone significant straightening and expansion, transforming into a modern 4-lane highway (5 lanes in one section) with an 80km/h speed limit. Once it enters the valley floor, the road continues with 2 lanes east and passes Queen Street and adjacent The Strand, with both standing as the primary hub for shopping and commerce in Wainuiomata. Wainuiomata Road ends where two other prominent roads begin, namely Fitzherbert Road which points northand Main Road which heads south toward Homedale, the oldest suburb in Wainuiomata.
