On September 30, 1989, the Wainuiomata Historical Museum opened its doors under the patronage of Harry Martin, the inaugural Mayor of Wainuiomata. Managed by dedicated volunteers and registered with the Charities Commission as the Wainuiomata Historical Museum Society Incorporated, its primary objective is to promote the history of Wainuiomata.

The museum houses the ‘old school,’ an iconic structure constructed in 1908 by James Burrow. It is one of the oldest purpose-built school buildings in the Wellington region. Initially accompanying an 1861/1862 building which was later demolished in 1916, an additional classroom was incorporated in 1938. Over time, the building served as an art classroom and later as a storage facility from the 1970s onwards.

Today, the original 1908 classroom has been meticulously transformed into a historical representation, featuring wooden desks from different eras, slates, blackboards, books, and school journals. This unique space offers children the opportunity to immerse themselves in the schooling practices of yesteryear. The 1938 addition showcases an assortment of household items, clothing, tools, photographs, and paintings, depicting life in the Wainuiomata Valley throughout the years. Generously donated by descendants of early settlers, these items provide a glimpse into the past.

In 2009, the museum underwent extensive internal refurbishments, unveiling new displays within drawers and desks, while also dedicating an area for research into the Society’s historical records, books, maps, and photographs. Notably, a comprehensive collection of school photographs is available for viewing in the classroom.

Please note: While this website is not officially associated with the museum, we highly recommend it as an excellent destination for exploring and delving into the rich history of Wainuiomata.
