This historic photograph shows Opossum Lodge and its external convenience (longdrop) as it appeared in the 1930s. Today, the site is known as Possum Lodge Farm and is located at 32 Crowther Road, Wainuiomata. While the exact year of construction is unknown, the lodge was already well established by this time.
Local photographs and captions from the period refer to the property as ‘Opossum Lodge’ in Moores Valley. Over time, the spelling shifted to the more commonly used “Possum”, reflecting broader changes in language rather than a change in location. Today’s Possum Lodge Farm occupies the same site and offers farm stays for travellers.
