A river wall was constructed in 1902 at the same time as the pipe replacement works for the former water race. The new 30-inch main was laid largely beneath Reservoir Road, running just above the Wainuiomata River. The wall’s purpose was to protect the roadway from further river encroachment and to ensure a stable foundation for the new water main along this stretch. During the project, a Venturi meter installation was also built further upstream beside the pipeline to accurately measure the flow through the new main.
