Thomas Scholes (1839–1923) was a 19th-century settler along Coast Road, where his house still stands at 103 Coast Road. Built around 1865 by Frederick Kershaw Crowther (1833–1907) and John Eric Crowther (1831–1911), this historic home is also known as August Cottage, named after local farmer Ashley Meredith August (1918–2010). It holds the distinction of being the oldest house in Wainuiomata.
