George Creek Road is named after either George Wood (1837–1884) or George Farrow Wood (1884–1952), both 19th-century settlers in Wainuiomata. The road runs from Morton Dam to the Wainuiomata entrance of the Ōrongorongo Tunnel, which leads through to Little Huia Creek in the Ōrongorongo Valley Water Catchment.
Constructed in 1922, the road was built to support the development of the Ōrongorongo Tunnel, a key part of Wellington’s early water supply infrastructure. It follows the course of George Creek and remains a private access route owned by the Greater Wellington Regional Council and managed by Wellington Water.
Before the road and during construction of the Orongorongo water catchment, materials were transported up the Orongorongo River on the south coast. The other route was up a 6.5km pack track, ascending to 300 meters then into the Orongorongo Valley from the Wainuiomata water catchment.
