Maintenance Road (Upper Road) built in the early 1920s, is an unsealed track that once provided access to the Orongorongo pipeline that ran at a higher elevation compared to the old water race and its replacement pipeline.
Though the road is still intact today, it is closed to the public, with a large locked gate preventing access for vehicles and pedestrians. The image above shows the road branching off Reservoir Road near the old dam. From here, the road runs parallel to Reservoir Road but higher up the hill, then eventually turns in a hairpin and climbs up to the top of the hill and heads along the ridge between Reservoir Valley and Moores Valley in the direction of Whitemans Valley. This section of the road provides access to areas of forestry in Moores Valley.
At one time, the road also forked off from the hairpin and continued to Whitcher Grove, but that section was abandoned decades ago and is now completely hidden within regenerating bush. This section is referred to here as Maintenance Track as there are small remnants of a walking track here.
