The History of Maintenance Road

Maintenance Road, an unsealed road or firebreak, originally provided access to the old pipeline and raceway that once distributed water from the original dam. Though the road is still intact today, it is closed to the public, with a large locked gate preventing access for vehicles or pedestrians. The image above shows the road as it appears from the  sealed Reservoir Road near the old dam. From here, the road runs parallel to Reservoir Road, then eventually climbing up to the top of the hill and heading back along the ridge between Reservoir Valley and Moores Valley, eventually connecting Whitemans Valley and the ECNZ Track above the Hutt Valley. At one time, it also connected to Whitcher Grove off Moores Valley Road, but that section has since been abandoned and is now hidden within regenerating bush. Some refer to this stretch as the Maintenance Track.
