Queen Street in Wainuiomata is a central hub, hosting a range of shops, the Community Centre, and the Public Library. It features several small businesses, including takeaways and restaurants, and is named in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth.
Previously, Wainuiomata’s primary shopping area was a mall with an entrance on Queen Street and three more access points through the surrounding car park. Over time, however, the mall fell into decline. Progressive Enterprises (now Woolworths) eventually acquired the property, redeveloping it into a supermarket and parking area on The Strand, another key commercial street in Wainuiomata. Before Queen Street became a focal point, the main shopping area was The Village in Homedale, the suburb’s oldest district.
Today, Queen Street hosts a variety of independent shops and services, while The Strand accommodates larger chain stores.
