Willis Grove is a quiet residential street in Wainuiomata with roots in the period when the valley was shifting from rural land into a planned suburban community.

The Name and Its Origin

Willis Grove was named after Norman Elias Willis (1901 to 1977), a dental surgeon based in Petone who was also a landowner and property developer. He was involved in the early subdivision and residential development of parts of Wainuiomata. The street name recognises his role in helping shape the area during a key phase of its growth from farmland and bush into housing.

Building a Suburb

Most of the houses on Willis Grove were built during the main suburban expansion of Homedale in the mid 1960s through to the early 1970s. A large number of homes date from 1966, 1967 and the period from 1970 to 1973. This places the street firmly within the era when Wainuiomata was rapidly filling with state and private housing, schools, shops and supporting infrastructure as families moved into the valley in large numbers.

The Reserve Behind the Street

Directly behind Willis Grove rises the bush covered land of Harry Todd Recreation Reserve. This reserve forms part of the steep hill country above Hine Road and Sunny Grove and provides local access into the wider network of hill tracks. Entrances from both Willis Grove and Hine Road lead into the bush, where tracks climb toward the higher ridges and viewpoints above the valley.

The reserve serves as a natural backdrop to the street, giving Willis Grove a strong connection to the bush.
