The Jansen Home on Fitzherbert Road, circa 1908, faced Black Creek. The Jansen family, of Scandinavian origin, arrived in Wellington as part of the immigration wave encouraged by the Vogel Scheme of the 1870s. This initiative, spearheaded by Sir Julius Vogel, was aimed at attracting immigrants to New Zealand to boost population and development. Vogel’s scheme played a significant role in encouraging Scandinavian settlement, among others, during this period.
