Wainuiomata Dam in 1888

Lower Dam - Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand - March 1888 - Reference 1/2-004089-G

Looking at the Wainuiomata Dam as seen in the year 1888.

This 1888 view of the original Wainuiomata dam shows the spillway on the right, newly planted pine trees in front of the dam wall, and a small boat shed. Interestingly, there is a frame visible to the left of the image, just above the river. It resembles part of a fence but could also be the remains of a structure that existed here in 1884 and probably earlier, during the dam’s construction and repair phases.

The newly planted pine trees may have been intended to strengthen the bank. Four years earlier, the bank had given way during a flood, causing significant damage to the dam and resulting in costly repairs.
