Looking at the Wainuiomata Dam as seen in the year 1888.
This 1888 photograph of the original Wainuiomata dam highlights the spillway on the right, a small boat shed, and freshly planted pine trees in front of the dam wall. The young pine trees were likely planted to reinforce the bank, which had collapsed four or five years earlier during a massive flooding event. The incident caused extensive damage to the dam, leading to delays and expensive repairs.
