The Main Road Bridge use to be called Wainuiomata School Bridge.

Charles Seymer Whitcher (1885 – 1961) constructed a single-lane concrete bridge across the Wainuiomata River in the year 1916. It was called the ‘School Bridge’ because it connected The Village to Wainuiomata School (now Wainuiomata Primary School).
