The Wainuiomata Wastewater Treatment Plant was decommissioned in November 2001 after serving the community since the 1950s. During its operational years, it treated wastewater and discharged it into the Wainuiomata River. Following its closure, the plant was repurposed as a pumping station, and the wastewater from Wainuiomata is now transported to the more advanced Seaview treatment plant in Lower Hutt, which offers enhanced treatment processes and greater environmental protection.

This shift aimed to improve efficiency and reduce the ecological footprint of wastewater management in the region.

The “new” Seaview plant is now under such strain from all the new high density housing, it constantly stinks the entire Seaview area out weekly!
