This wetlands area is located behind the lower dam in Wainuiomata. This dam was originally built in 1878 and is still there today, but was decommissioned in the 1950s. In 2007, the area behind the lower dam was reverted to a wetlands. This was the habitat type before construction of the dam. Today, this wetland is a haven for wetland plant species and birds.
To establish the wetland, it was necessary to clear willow trees and other vegetation from the lake bed. Subsequently, native plantings were implemented around the lake margins and the surrounding area.
In 2013, the public was given access to the lower dam and wetlands for the first time. Previously, the public could access this area only through organised tours.
