HEAVY RAINFALL TOWARDS WELLINGTON
Great Volume of Water in Hutt River
Wellington Water Supply Seriously Affected
Portion of Wainuiomata Main Carried Away
City Has to Rely on Karori Reservoir
[By Telegraph—Press Association]
WELLINGTON, This Day
Heavy rain during the past few days has caused a great flow of water in the Hutt River, near the mouth of which Gear Island divides the river into two channels. Over these channels are built bridges to carry the pipes for the city’s water supply from Wainuiomata.
Recently, the Hutt River Board directed the water from the western channel so that the entire flow of the river passed through the eastern channel.
News comes from the Hutt this morning that the heavy flood has washed away about a chain and a half of the eastern bridge and pipes, completely cutting off the main water supply to Wellington. The city now has to rely entirely on the Karori reservoir, which can only supply for a limited period. Details are not yet available.
