It is believed that alluvial gold has been discovered in a creek at Wainuiomata, about ten miles from Wellington. Unfortunately for the prospects of a payable goldfield being discovered near Wellington, previous experiences of a similar nature are adverse to the practical development of such a theory. Kaiwarra, Terawiti, and other localities have had their day in the way of a gold excitement, the hopes of the deluded prospectors having been doomed to disappointment. The Teremakau rush is attracting a small proportion of the nomadic element of our population just now, by the fame of its excellence, but we much question if even it is likely to prove permanently productive. It is scarcely likely that the item of news now forwarded from Wainuiomata will cause one extra throb of expectation or pulsation of excitement to be experienced, even by those who normally are most deeply stirred by such intelligence.
