AT SOLOMON’S KNOB
THE NEW WAINUI RESERVOIR
Tenders will shortly be called for the construction of the big reservoir dam at Solomon’s Knob, Wainui, behind which will eventually be pent up 140 million gallons of water.
The new dam will be of quite a different type to those already in existence here; constructed of reinforced concrete, it will have a sloping deck (upstream), supported on vertical piers or buttresses. The maximum depth of water will be 50 feet — a pressure at the base of the dam of 21 lbs. to the square inch.
The dam itself will not be curved, as at the new reservoir at Karori, but will run perfectly straight, for a length of 540 feet. The dam at Solomon’s Knob will be used as a storage reservoir only, although the necessary connections will be provided both for supplies for the lower dam (the present reservoir) or the city mains direct.
The surface level of the new reservoir will be, from the sea-level, 470 feet, which should give a very good pressure.
