Evening Post 14 Mar 1888

A whare at Wainui-o-Mata, occupied by a party of telegraph linemen, was destroyed by fire about 1 o’clock yesterday.

At the time the fire occurred all the men were away, and it is supposed that the wind blew some embers from a fire left smouldering by the cook of the party against the walls of the hut, which, being lightly built, speedily caught fire.

The hut contained a quantity of wearing apparel and a dog, the unfortunate animal being burnt.

The hut was uninsured, and the damage is estimated by Mr. J. Wakeham, the owner, at £40.
