Replenishing the Larder

The Acclimatisation Society proceeded against Henry Gilbert Black and John Charles Dick at the Magistrate’s Court today for breaches of the Animals Protection Act.

Black was found in possession of a couple of hares at Orongo Orongo during the close season and gave as an explanation that he and his camping party had run short of food, and the hares were shot to replenish the larder. Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M., imposed a fine of £1 and costs.

When charged with fishing for trout without a licence at Wainuiomata, Dick, who is a returned soldier, said that he was trying his arm, which had been injured at the front, before obtaining a licence. He had always taken out licences in previous seasons. The minimum penalty, £2, and costs, was imposed.
