The Gawler Reservoir in Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt, is a significant component of Wainuiomata’s water infrastructure. Constructed in 1971, it holds approximately 3.9 million litres of water and was named after Stanley William Gawler, a Hutt County Council engineer active in the 1960s .
Located on Gawler Grove, it is second only to the larger Konini Reservoir on Konini Street which holds 5.1 million litres.
Gawler Reservoir acts as a support system for the Wainuiomata water network, especially during high-demand periods or when other supply routes are disrupted. It stores treated water and helps maintain pressure in the local reticulation system. It’s one of several smaller reservoirs integrated into the broader Wellington Regional water supply network, maintained by Wellington Water on behalf of Greater Wellington Regional Council.
