George Creek No.2 Bridge

George Creek No.2 Bridge completed -

New bridge built over George Creek after a falling tree destroyed the previous crossing.

In May 2023, a fallen tree in the restricted Wainuiomata Catchment area destroyed George Creek No. 2 Bridge on George Creek Road. Bridge It NZ won the tender to construct a replacement, which has since been completed. The bridge provides a vital vehicle link between the Wainuiomata Water Treatment Plant and the Orongorongo Tunnel. The work was commissioned by Wellington Water on behalf of Greater Wellington.

This is not the first time a bridge has been rebuilt on or near this site. Just over 100 years ago in December 1924 a previous bridge on George Creek Road was destroyed in a flood.

George Creek Road was originally built during the construction of the Orongorongo pipeline. It runs between Morton Dam and the Orongorongo Tunnel, which provides access to the Orongorongo Water Catchment.
