An assessment revealed the necessity to reinforce the Konini Reservoir to ensure its resilience against powerful earthquakes.
The recent completion of seismic strengthening for Konini Reservoir saw a marked a significant enhancement in the area’s water network resilience. Constructed in 1959 and catering for approximately 17,000 residents, the structure underwent crucial reinforcement measures. These included the installation of a new beam to fortify both walls and floor, accompanied by the replacement of the floor and roof.
Tristan Reynard, the Wellington Water Project Manager, underscored the importance of such upgrades, especially following a notable earthquake in November. He expressed confidence in the reservoir’s ability to withstand future seismic events.
Initiated in June 2016 and finalized by December of the same year, the project incurred a $1.5 million investment, ensuring the extension of the reservoir’s lifespan by an additional 50 years.
