As the result of six months’ work by day labour, under the personal supervision of the City Engineer, the old defective water-race at Wainui-o-mata has been replaced by a new line of pipes and an increased pressure of 7lb has been obtained through direct connection with the existing reservoir.
The work, which was completed in a most satisfactory manner, and which gave no sign of defect from the first moment that the water was liberated into the pipes on Saturday, is merely a temporary expedient to avert breakdown.
If Wellington experiences a wet summer, it will probably provide a sufficiency of water to supply the whole city. If a dry summer is experienced, however, a cry will, of course, go up for an increased supply, and it will have to be met.
In the meantime, in order to secure adequate data in regard to the actual amount of water finding its way through the pipes, a Venturi meter has been attached to the system.
A river wall has also been built adjoining the reservoir road to prevent further encroachment by the river and to secure a firm foundation for the water mains past that point.
The Agricultural Department has almost decided to station the imported stallion Serapion in the Wairarapa for this season.
