We are pleased to report satisfactory progress on the Wainuiomata waterworks. The tunnel is nearly completed, with only 52 feet separating the workmen at each face. The sound of the picks can be distinctly heard through the intervening ground.
When completed, the tunnel will be within three chains of half a mile in length. It is expected that the tunnel will break through the range in three weeks’ time. However, it will still be far from finished, as a great deal of lining work remains to be done, which will likely continue until the reservoir is completed.
Contracts for the reservoir work are to be called for shortly. Turning the water into the mains is anticipated to take place by the end of June.
