Solomon’s Knob Reservoir

Water for Wellington - The Weekly Graphic and New Zealand Mail for November 24, 1909

The Weekly Graphic and New Zealand Mail, November 24, 1909.

Before being labelled Morton Dam, the project was referred to as ‘Solomons Knob’ Reservoir after an adjacent hill of the same name.

During the construction phase of the Morton Dam in Wainuiomata, the media dubbed it Solomons Knob Reservoir. Enclosed are newspaper excerpts narrating the story of the dam’s development. Upon successful completion, the structure was officially named Morton Dam, honoring its chief architect, William Hobart Morton (1866–1923). Morton was an accomplished engineer who left a lasting legacy through the dam’s distinctive design which was characterized by reinforced concrete buttresses.
