Small plane crashes

PA         Wellington

A light twin-engine aircraft carrying two or three persons crashed on Orongorongo Station, south of Wainuiomata last night.

The aircraft was believed to have been on its way from Paraparaumu to Christchurch.

Early this morning, emergency services were trying to reach the crash site. A helicopter equipped with a searchlight, flown by Mr Peter Button, confirmed just before 1 a.m. that the plane had crashed near the station.

Air traffic control at Wellington Airport alerted the Wellington fire brigade just after midnight that a plane had crashed.

Mr Button found the plane completely burnt out, pointing uphill about 120 metres from the peak of a hill with a summit of about 1000 metres.
