Walking through Remutaka Forest Park is a rewarding experience, offering some of the Wellington Region’s most diverse and scenic natural landscapes. Located on the southern edge of the Remutaka Range, the park features a mix of native forest, rugged hills, winding river valleys, and historic trails, making it a popular destination for walkers, trampers, and nature lovers alike.
The park is home to extensive native bush, including beech, rātā, kamahi, and podocarp forest. If you’re quiet and patient, you might spot tūī, kererū (wood pigeon), pīwakawaka (fantail), or even a kākā. In some areas, you may hear kiwi at night, especially in the northern Catchpool Valley, where conservation efforts have been strong.
Many tracks follow or cross old Māori trails and early settler routes. The Ōrongorongo Valley, in particular, has a long history of use by early trampers and recreational clubs, with rustic huts available for overnight stays.
