Exotic trees like pines, eucalypts, and redwoods were planted in Wainuiomata to replace some logged areas.

Exotic trees in Wainuiomata were introduced primarily to replace native trees that were logged in the mid to late 1800s. The main reasons included timber production, erosion control, and beautification or logged areas.

Exotics feature particularly in the hills behind Hine Road and Sunny Grove as well as Reservoir Valley, where pines and eucalypts were planted in the 1970s. A few redwoods were also introduced over 100 years ago, adding to the variety of non-native species in the valley. Over time, exotic trees have been planted along streets and in public spaces, bringing bursts of vibrant red and golden foliage in autumn, while spring brings an array of blossoms.

While native forests dominate much of Wainuiomata’s nature reserves, exotic plantings are also present in pockets and sometimes side by side with natives.
