Artefact below Reservoir Road - 2024 - © wainuiomata.netThe exact purpose of this recently uncovered rusted object remains unclear, but it may be an old log dolly or log cart. It was found below a slip or hole that formed near Reservoir Road after flooding, suggesting it could have been buried during a road resurfacing or widening project. It features an electric pin, so this would rule out its burial during the original construction of the road and instead place it in the 1950s or 1960s at its earliest.

Log carts are specialised equipment used in forestry and logging to lift and transport logs with minimal ground contact, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact. These carts come in various designs, from manually operated models to those towed by tractors, ATVs, or other machinery.

A modern log arch cartIf this object is a log cart, it primary function was to transport logs. The inclusion of an electric pinned plug indicates it was intended to be towed by a motorised vehicle. While modern log carts were a significant advancement in timber transport during the mid-20th century, logging in Reservoir Valley (formerly Sinclair Valley) ceased in the 1880s. Therefore, if not used for logging, this cart might have been repurposed to transport water pipes, lampposts, or other materials related to later infrastructure projects in the area.
