Morton Dam Construction Site

Morton Dam Construction - c1908 - Source: WHMS: L3593

This photograph shows Morton Dam under construction, likely taken between 1907 and 1908. In the foreground, the white building is a large galvanised shed that housed machinery and contained separate workshops for carpentry and blacksmithing. A small railway or tramway can be seen, used to transport materials to and from the site.

Above the building, a terrace has been carved into the hillside at Solomon’s Knob, while in the background to the right, the lake behind the old dam is visible.

In the foreground, you can see the old confluence of Wainuiomata River and George Creek.
