The old dam spillway is one of the highlights of the Lower Dam Walk.
The dam and its spillway was part of the original 1880s water supply system that served Wellington. The spillway was designed to safely release excess water. Constructed from concrete and stone, the spillway channelled surplus water back into the Wainuiomata River, helping regulate the reservoirs’ level. After the dam was decommissioned, the spillway was lowered for safety reasons.
