The Village in Decline

A photo essay capturing the decline and demise of ‘The Village’ as we know it.

While the shops in The Village in Wainuiomata are in a state of decline, even abandonment, it is hard to say what will rise up in their place. Already, we have seen the Empire Tavern being replaced with Pākura Place, a modern property development that is still under construction. One thing is certain however, The Village will be almost unrecognisable once it is redeveloped. These derelict buildings will perhaps be replaced by a mix of housing and retail.

The gradual decline began when Queen Street emerged as the primary hub decades ago. Since then, numerous businesses, predominantly smaller establishments such as eateries, convenience stores, bakeries, pharmacies, cafes, butcher shops, newsstands, and real estate agencies, have come and gone in. Despite Queen Street being the main center, these diverse shops and services have contributed to The Village’s vitality, making it a thriving focal point for Homedale in the past.
