The Orongorongo system collects water from the Orongorongo River, Big Huia, and Little Huia Streams, conveying it to the Wainuiomata treatment plant through a 5.6km pipeline and tunnel. The water pressure in the pipe is utilized to power a turbine, generating electricity for the plant. Any surplus electricity is distributed to the local power grid.
