The photo shows the Wainuiomata Tunnel which was never completed as a single continuous bore. The first section, excavated from the Seaview side, was abandoned partway through the hill due to financial difficulties. Decades later, the tunnel was completed using a narrower bore to connect through to Wainuiomata, creating a distinctive transition point about a third of the way in from the Seaview entrance where the tunnel narrows.
