This photo shows the Williams General Store on Main Road, Wainuiomata, around 1939. The building was originally part of the shop and post office attached to the McIlvride family home, dating back to the 1880s or earlier.
The shop was detached from the house and moved on skids before or during the development of Moores Valley Road. Its new location was at the intersection of what is now Main Road and Moores Valley Road. The building served multiple purposes over the years, acting as the final bus stop, a petrol station, post office, and the office for both Wainuiomata Transport and the Shingle Company. In later decades, the site was primarily a petrol station. Today, the site is the location for earthworks vehicles.
