Nikau Creek Track is an easy walk that follows the course of Nikau Creek, a half-hour there and back trip.
Nikau Creek Track (also called Nikau Track) runs alongside the waters of Nikau Creek for 625 metres, providing an approximately 30 minute round-trip adventure through the rainforest landscape. With little chance of encountering other hikers, it offers a quick peaceful escape, perfect for immersing yourself in the melodies of birdsong. The track is an easy flat walk, concluding at a point where two seats are situated, alongside a sign indicating the track’s conclusion.
The history of this track is interesting. It was once the location for the Whakanui Track, but that track was relocated to Sunny Grove in the early 1980s. This shift occurred because the land around Nikau Creek was part of the Water Board Catchment, and is to this day, owned by the Water Board, who discouraged public access. Consequently, Nikau Creek Track was widened and given its name after the Whakanui Track was moved and the Morton Dam was decommissioned. Today, the old Whakanui Track is still there if you look hard enough. It branches off Nikau Creek Track, 547 metres from the entrance to the Nikau Creek Track. It is often marked by a cairn of stones.
There also a hidden extension to the Nikau Creek Track, which was part of the track and formed part of an older track that existed here when the old Whakanui Track was in public use. The origin of the old track is unknown, but it could have its origin as a forestry track. It is often referred to by its descriptive, The Old Nikau Creek Track.
