Established in the 1970s, this track was created as a geological survey route to examine rock formations for a proposed, but ultimately rejected, dam project on the Wainuiomata River.
The name Tana Umaga refers to a famous All Blacks rugby player who was captain of New Zealand from 2004 to 2005. Tana Umaga hails from Wainuiomata.
