Earth Bridge

An Earth Bridge on Maintenance Road allowed passage over the concrete raceway.

Along a short section of Maintenance Track a now abandoned section of Maintenance Road, there is an earth bridge. Likely constructed in the 1880s, this bridge provided passage above while protecting the buried water race beneath. This covered concrete race was essentially a long buried culvert that channeled water from the dam to Colemans Tunnel.

Below the bridge wall, a swamp has formed where a hillside creek flows in. It was long assumed that a drainage pipe had once directed the creek beneath the bridge but had since become blocked as evidenced by the pooling and silt buildup behind the wall. In 2025, the outlet of this drainage pipe was finally discovered further down the hillside, marked by a brick-lined opening.

Interestingly, a news article from March 1887 reported a major leak in the water race at this very location. It explained that a flume and shaft had been constructed to divert gully water beneath the race, with a short embankment built above to support it. Over time, the embankment had settled slightly, most likely due to a failure in the flume. This caused the invert of the race to sink, while the sides and crown remained in place between the abutments—behaving much like a beam or truss under load.
